As if by Fate

In August, our friend, Bonnie, found a 5 week old tuxedo cat wandering around in traffic, on Flatbush Ave. She brought him into her home and made sure he had everything he needed, but she is allergic to cats and couldn't keep him.

Meanwhile, elsewhere in Brooklyn, Greta and I had just decided to start saving up money to adopt a kitten. We had always wanted a kitten and knew it would take a few months of saving spare change to be able to afford an adoption. We were hoping to save up enough by Christmas.

Brave New Home

Bonnie posted this photo on Facebook and when I saw it, I knew we would be able to give him a great home. We called our landlord's voicemail within 5 minutes to make sure a kitten was okay in our apartment, and waited anxiously for him to return our call.

As soon as he called us back, and gave us the go ahead, we made plans to pick him up. I spent the day making kitten play structures out of cardboard boxes leftover from our move, and when Greta picked him up that evening, we could immediately see that this guy had a lot of personality.

He was wide-eyed, nervous and unsure, but still very playful. We kept him in a small corral the first night, and in the kitchen for the next few days, just to make sure he was safe, while we kitten-proofed the rest of our home.

What's in a Name?

We named this little guy Sir Noggin of Loxley for a few reasons. Firstly, our friend, Tonya, suggested "Noggin" when we sent her photos of the odd little lump on his head. She is a vet up in Maine, so we knew she might have some ideas about it. We liked her suggestion a lot, but he was an adventurer; he had a story. We wanted something a little more legendary. We named him Sir, hoping he would serve as a knight of the realm, willing to hunt any wandering rogue cockroaches and spiders that he should come across. Loxley is a variation on Robin Hood's "Locksley," spelled the way I always wrote it as a kid, when I was making signs for forts in the woods and such.

A Very Special Kitten

Sir Noggin went to visit the ASPCA's Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital in Manhattan. It was his first big adventure since joining our family and he was pretty nervous when he heard the rushing cards and hissing city buses, but he sure loved the doctors and nurses at the hospital. Well, he did... Until they gave him vaccines! Youch!

Dr. Pomrantz was able to get a good look at Noggin's Noggin, and we found out some interesting stuff about it. You can learn all about the lump on this kitten's head, and why he needs a surgery to fix it, here.
